Cargo E-Tricycle OEM Guide: Specs, Box Configurations & Sourcing

The cargo e-tricycle is the fastest-growing OEM category coming out of Shenzhen — and it is not hard to see why. A three-wheeler with a 300–500 kg payload, a 150–500 L box and a sub-$1,600 FOB price replaces vehicles that cost 20 times as much to own and operate. For OEM buyers — delivery startups, mobile-vending operators, municipal fleets, rural distributors — the cargo trike is a different engineering problem than a passenger trike or an e-bike: the frame is a load-bearing structure, the motor must deliver torque rather than top speed, and the box is a product in itself. This guide covers every specification that matters when you source cargo trikes under your own brand, using the platform EBIKE builds for export: 800W–1200W hub motors with a differential, 60V/72V battery packs, hydraulic disc brakes, and reverse gear.

Where the Cargo Tricycle Fits in the Vehicle Lineup

Cargo trikes sit between passenger trikes and cargo e-bikes, and each category serves a different buyer:

  • Passenger e-tricycles — built for rider comfort and low step-over height, payloads around 150–250 kg. The full engineering logic for that category is in our passenger e-tricycle OEM guide.
  • Cargo e-bikes — two-wheeled longtails and front-loaders, 100–200 kg payload, maneuverable in dense urban bike lanes. We compare them head-to-head with trikes for fleet duty in the cargo delivery fleet guide.
  • Cargo e-tricycles — two rear wheels carrying the load, 300–500 kg payload, stable at standstill, no balance required. This is the category for heavy, bulky, or multi-stop work.

The rule of thumb: if the load regularly exceeds 200 kg, needs a box larger than 150 L, or must be carried over gravel and curb cuts, the trike wins. The economics that make this decision obvious are worked out in our cargo trike vs pickup truck cost comparison.

Motor and Drivetrain: Torque over Speed

Cargo trikes are spec’d for torque, not speed. The platform uses a brushless hub motor with a differential on the rear axle — the differential is non-negotiable, because two driven rear wheels without one will fight each other in every corner and chew through tires. The three motor options:

The 1200W/72V combination is the one to spec for gravel roads and 8–10° grades at full payload. Every cargo trike also ships with a three-position selector (forward / neutral / reverse): at 300–500 kg, you do not push a loaded trike backwards by hand, and the reverse gear is what makes alley docking and market-stall positioning practical.

Payload, Frame and Running Gear

Payload capacity is a frame engineering decision, not a sticker number. The export platform specs:

  • 300 kg rated (EU) / 500 kg rated (non-EU) — the EU rating stays under the L-category weight envelope; the non-EU rating is the structural maximum of the same frame with a stiffer rear spring pack.
  • Curb weight 150–220 kg depending on battery and box — the trike carries roughly twice its own weight, which is why the frame uses a full-length rear cargo deck welded to the main tube rather than a bolt-on rack.
  • Tires 3.00-12 front / 3.75-12 dual rear — the dual rear tires carry the load and provide the standstill stability that makes cargo trikes safe to load and unload.
  • Brakes: hydraulic disc front + dual drum rear + parking brake — the parking brake matters at 500 kg on any slope; a loaded trike rolls, and it rolls hard.

Brake fade with a heavy load is the #1 field complaint on cheap cargo trikes. Hydraulic discs up front handle the dynamic braking; the dual rear drums are the parking and emergency circuit. The Cargo Box: 150–500 L of Configuration Space

The box is where the OEM program becomes a real product. The platform offers four box families:

  • Flatbed (150 L equivalent) — for contractors, couriers with their own totes, and tie-down loads. Add stake sides or a pipe rack.
  • Fixed box (250–300 L) — the delivery standard: one-piece steel or composite body, tailgate, and lockable lid.
  • Drop-side box (300–500 L) — the rural and market favorite: three hinged sides that fold flat for loading crates, sacks and feed from any angle. This is the configuration our farm and ranch buyers and mobile vending operators spec most often.
  • Custom build-out — insulated inserts for food, beverage racks, canopy frames, sign panels. Vending operators typically start from the drop-side box and add their cart build-out on top; the process is documented in our mobile vending guide.

Box material matters for longevity: steel with an e-coat base survives market-square abuse; composite saves 15–20 kg of curb weight for range. Both mount on the same deck rails, so you can change box family on the same frame — a useful option to offer your own customers.

Battery and Range for Duty Cycles

Cargo trikes are work vehicles — range must be spec’d to the shift, not the brochure. The two pack options:

  • 60V 32Ah NMC — 1.9 kWh, 50–65 km at 200 kg payload on flat ground. The price-leader pack for urban delivery and vending.
  • 72V 40Ah LFP — 2.9 kWh, 65–80 km, longer cycle life (2,000+ cycles) and better high-temperature tolerance. The spec for hot climates and 2-shift days.

Both packs are swappable — the lock-and-slide tray takes under a minute to change, which turns one trike into a two-shift vehicle with a spare pack on charge. Electronics, Lighting and Fleet Readiness

The export platform’s standard electronics package: LCD dashboard showing speed, battery, payload and gear position; full LED lighting front and rear; and an optional warning-light bar for road work. Certification and Compliance

Certification depends on where the trike is sold and what class it falls into:

  • EU — the 300 kg-rated 800W configuration can be positioned as an EPAC-adjacent utility vehicle or type-approved under L-category rules depending on throttle configuration; the decision tree and costs are in our EU vs US certification guide.

  • Battery — UN 38.3 for air and sea freight in all markets; EN 50604 or UL 2271 per destination.
