Water and beverage delivery is a heavy, low-margin, high-frequency business that punishes a vehicle with high fuel cost and high upkeep. Every drop has to fight down a street, up an alley, and into a basement or a stall — and the cost of running the truck that carries it can eat the margin on the very bottle inside the box. An electric cargo tricycle inverts that math. It carries a full day's worth of bottled water cheaply, threads into spaces a truck cannot reach, and returns the operating margin to a category that usually works on thin numbers. This guide breaks down the three beverage delivery builds, the payload math that determines how much a trike can actually carry, and how to buy one as an OEM program.
The Margin Problem in Water Delivery
Bottled water and beverage distribution is a game of pennies per drop and drops per route. A delivery truck costs $9–14 of fuel per 100 km, needs a commercial driver, and is oversized for a residential street of 30 customers. An e-tricycle runs on $0.30–0.60 of electricity per 100 km, needs no commercial driver's license at the 20 mph no-license class, and is built for exactly the short, dense route a water round is. When the energy cost drops by 20× and the driver-cost drops to a single operator, the per-drop profit climbs enough to pay for the vehicle in a fraction of a year. The Three Beverage Builds
The same cargo platform is configured differently for bottled water, bulk liquid, and event or street vending. The only genuinely different element is the box; the chassis, drivetrain and battery stay consistent.
Bottled Water and Beverage Drops
The volume build is a stackable cargo box with vertical dividers that hold bottles upright, a flat non-skid floor, and side or rear access for fast unloading at a doorstep. A 300 kg payload (EU class) or 500 kg (non-EU) works out to a workable number of 20 L or 5-gallon bottles per run. Tanker: Bulk Liquid and Refill Runs
Where a distributor refills or serves bulk liquid rather than retail bottles, the build is a sealed food-grade tank on a flatbed with a gravity or small pump tap. The payload rating becomes the volume limit: at roughly 1 kg per litre, a 300–500 kg payload caps a tanker at 300–500 litres per trip — enough for dozens of refill customers or a single large event drop. Event and Street Hydration

Payload Math: How Much a Tricycle Actually Carries
The number that matters is not the box volume — it is the weight limit, because water is dense. The rule of thumb is 1 kg per litre, so payload in kg is effectively the maximum liquid litres per trip.

Motor and Grade: The Crate Headroom
Water is carried daily over the same streets, so a beverage trike must start from a stop on a grade with a full box. This is a torque problem, not a top-speed problem. Certification for a Beverage Fleet
A beverage trike crosses public roads and commercial areas daily, so the class is set by speed and power the same way as any cargo trike. A 750W / 20 mph (32 km/h) throttle unit sits in the Class 2 e-bike or local low-speed band in most states — no license, no registration, no insurance. The electrical-safety certification is UL 2849 in the US and EN 15194 in the EU, with EN 50604 for the battery and UN 38.3 for transport. Buying a Beverage Trike as an OEM Program
Distribution margins are thin, so the buy has to be disciplined. Confirm the MOQ — typically 50 assembled units or 100 with custom livery and box layout — then run a sample on a real round: load the actual bottles you carry, run the actual route, and verify three things — that the box holds bottles upright without rattling, that the trike starts from a stop on the worst grade on the route with a full load, and that the range survives an unplanned detour.
